The at invites applicants for a Teaching Assistant Professor of Geography with a specialization in sustainability starting August 11, 2023. This is a 9-month, full-time position with full benefits. Teaching Assistant Professor appointments have renewable terms of up to three years, with no limit on the number of terms. Teaching Assistant Professors are eligible for promotion, e.g., to Teaching Associate Professor and Teaching Professor; however, promotion to senior ranks is not a requirement for institutional commitment and career stability. The candidate will join a vibrant transdisciplinary department whose faculty and students are working across the social, environmental, and earth sciences.

The Department of Geology and Geography is in the process of transforming itself into a school focused on the physical and social dimensions of global sustainability. The Teaching Assistant Professor of Sustainability is one of five new faculty positions that will contribute to this academic transformation. In Fall 2023 we will launch two new undergraduate programs in Sustainability Studies (BA) and Earth and Environmental Science (BS). These new programs complement long standing offerings in Geography, Geology, and Environmental Geoscience along with an MA and PhD in Geography, MS and PhD in Geology, MS in Geospatial Science and a graduate certificate program in GIS and Spatial Analysis. Faculty in the Department of Geology and Geography teach thousands of students, maintain highly active externally funded research programs, and provide service to the state, Appalachian region, and the world. The department currently supports 21 faculty, 34 graduate teaching assistants, 36 graduate research assistants and two graduate fellows. The department has outstanding geospatial science teaching and research facilities, hosts the WV GIS Technical Center and WVU Center for Resilient Communities and is housed in its own extensively renovated Brooks Hall on the Downtown campus of WVU.

The Morgantown campus is situated along the Monongahela River and Rail Trail, is within 10 miles of Coopers Rock State Forest, and within easy traveling distance of Washington, D.C., Pittsburgh, PA, and Cleveland and Columbus, OH. Qualifications

The successful applicant must have: 1) a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree by the time of appointment in Geography or closely related field such as Sustainability Science, Earth Science, or Environmental Studies; 2) the ability or potential to teach courses in sustainable earth, global sustainability, climate system science, sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, climate and environmental justice, and/or global environmental change; 3) strong potential to make an outstanding pedagogical contribution in the social and physical dimensions of sustainability; 4) evidence or potential to mentor a diverse group of students; 5) evidence of or the potential to advise students in career pathways in sustainability; 6) excellent written and oral communication skills. The teaching load is four courses of course equivalents per semester (4-4).
